  Salt Spray Testing
Salt Spray Testing provides a controlled accelerated corrosive environment to evaluate the relative corrosion resistance of the coating or part itself. Parts or panels are placed inside a chamber and exposed continually for a specified period then evaluated for resistance to rust.

Standards

  • ASTM B117 Standard Practice for Operating Salt Spray (Fog) Apparatus
  • Daimler Chrysler LP-463-PB-10-01 Salt Spray Test
  • Ford Motor Company BI 103-01 Salt Spray Resistance Test for Painted Panels and Parts
  • General Motors GM4298P Salt Spray Test
  • DIN 500021 Salt spray testing
  • Nissan M0140 Salt spray testing
  • Toyota TSH1552G Test Method of Salt Spray
  • Honda HES 6501 Salt spray test
  • ISO 9227 Corrosion tests in artificial atmospheres - salt spray tests.

Capabilities and Equipment:

Assured Testing Services maintains multiple cabinets conforming to ASTM B117 continuously and multiple cabinets for alternative salt spray tests such as TSH1552G. Parts of various sizes can be accommodated in the chamber. Parts often go into the cabinet the same day received. Upon test completion, parts are evaluated and test reports generated quickly.

Humidity Testing (Including ASTM D1735, ASTM D 2247, GM 4465)
Humidity Testing provides a controlled accelerated corrosive environment, similar to salt spray testing, to evaluate the relative corrosion resistance of the coating or part itself. Humidity Testing is performed in the same type of environment without the salt component so it is considered less harsh. Parts or panels are placed inside a chamber and exposed continually for a specified period then evaluated for resistance to rust. Often an adhesion test is performed directly after humidity exposure.

Standards:

  • ASTM D1735 Standard Practice for Testing Water Resistance of Coatings Using Water Fog Apparatus
  • ASTM D 2247 Standard Practice for Testing Water Resistance of Coatings in 100% Relative Humidity
  • Daimler Chrysler LP-463-PB-09-01 Condensing Humidity Resistance Test
  • General Motors GM4465P Water Fog Humidity Test
Capabilities and Equipment:
Assured Testing Services maintains a 30 cubic foot cabinet for Humidity Testing. Parts of various sizes can be accommodated in the chamber. Parts often go into the cabinet the same day received. Upon test completion, parts are evaluated and test reports generated quickly.

Acetic Acid/Copper Acetic Acid Testing (Including ASTM B368, DIN 50021)

When salt spray testing is not corrosive enough, the acetic acid or copper acetic acid test is available. This increases the corrosiveness of the standard salt spray test by lowering the pH making it more acidic and/or increasing the operating temperature. This is also known as the CASS test.

Standards:

  • ASTM G85 A1 Standard Practice for Modified Sal Spray (Fog) Testing
  • ASTM B368 Standard Test Method for Copper Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray (Fog) Testing (CASS Test)
  • DIN 50021 Salt Spray Testing
  • Ford BG105-01 Copper Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray Testing (CASS Test)
  • GM 4476P CASS Test, Copper Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray Test (Fog)
  • ISO 6988 Kesternich Testing

Capabilities and Equipment:
Assured Testing Services has a 30 cubic foot chamber that can be used for CASS testing. Parts of various sizes can be accommodated. Upon test completion, parts are evaluated and test reports generated quickly.

  Kesternich Testing

The Kesternich test simulates the detrimental effects of acid rain. The test calls for dissolving sulfuric dioxide in distilled water, creating sulfuric acid. The chamber is heated for 8 hours at 100% relative humidity. After the 8 hours, the chamber vents the excess sulfuric dioxide and returns to room temperature. The cycle is repeated every day.

Standards:

  • ASTM G87 Standard Practice for Conducting Moist SO2 Tests
  • DIN 50018 Sulfur Dioxide corrosion
  • ISO 3231 Determination of resistance to humid atmospheres containing sulfur dioxide.

Capabilities and Equipment:
Assured Testing Services has a KS-300 chamber dedicated to sulfur dioxide testing.

  Accreditations:
Assured Testing Services is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by A2LA (American Association for Laboratory Accreditation). The certificate number is 2012.01.
